We anticipated a battle as recent rainfall left the pitch heavy and challenging. The girls were tasked with being aggressive and assertive and to embrace the physical aspect of the game. Knowing that Thatcham like to dominate early we refused to let them settle and fought hard from the very first whistle.
Our pressing was relentless across the pitch, leaving Thatcham struggling to respond. For much of the game they were pinned back with Mellor showing her quality and delivering superb through balls and consistently turning their defence. Tallulah was sharp and physical up front, winning and converting a penalty before creating a second goal through sheer determination. Abbie commanded the midfield, using her strength to outmuscle opponents, while Lalia’s tenacity ensured Thatcham had no time to play. Lottie thrived in the tough conditions, never missing a challenge and Ava was imperious and always in control at the back. It was fantastic to see Tay return from injury, looking as strong as ever. Lils delivered her most physical performance yet, battling hard against a quality opponent. Eva linked play well and pressed with aggression, while Ava E is settling in, finding her voice and using her speed to trouble defenders. Grace was sharp, covering ground to be a threat in the box while never neglecting her defensive duties. Sadie was composed on the ball and a constant threat to Thatcham. Isla, returning from illness, gave everything on a difficult pitch. Faith made three crucial saves to keep us in the game, and her kicking was exceptional given the conditions.
This was another outstanding all round team performance. We’ve been so impressed with the way the girls have responded since the disappointing loss at Woodley. Now unbeaten in three, we’re through to the semi-finals of the cup!
I’m sure yesterday’s match was tough for parents to watch at times but the girls stood tall, stuck together and handled everything Thatcham threw at them with grace and composure and I couldn’t be prouder.
