A dramatic warm‑up saw us lose Sadie to injury, leaving us with just 10 players. Once we’d checked she was okay and ensured the rest of the squad were settled, the girls stepped onto the pitch with focus, energy, and a determination that set the tone for the entire match.
We spoke recently in training about holding high standards, individually and as a team, and about bringing energy, effort, and fun to everything they do. Every single one of the ten girls delivered exactly that.
Finchampstead Fire Blue produced one of their finest performances of the season against a strong Woodley side, who are the current County Cup champions. We controlled the tempo, had great shape and showed grit, flair and real togetherness throughout.
The first half was tight and competitive, ending 0–0 but the girls came out for the second half absolutely flying, first onto the pitch and first on the scoresheet. Great work down the right from Tallulah following a brilliant throw from Lottie led to a composed, confident finish from Grace to make it 1–0.
Moments later, we doubled our lead. A superb kick and assist from Faith released Tallulah, who spotted the keeper off her line and produced a cheeky lob from distance. Brilliant to see two long range goals as we’ve worked hard this season on ball striking and encouraging the girls to shoot with confidence and it’s great to see it paying off.
Our game management in the final 25 minutes was outstanding. Faith pulled off an excellent save and the whole team worked tirelessly to protect the clean sheet. A standout moment came in the final minute, with Ava E and Abbie sprinting the full width of the pitch to win the ball and shut down Woodley’s last couple of attacks. That desire summed up the entire performance.
To go away to a strong team, play the entire match with 10 players, score two great goals, keep a clean sheet and come home with three points is something to be incredibly proud of. Well done girls!
